Yes, Kris, sometimes I forget how frightfully ubiquitous Clavell's book and TV mini-series was.

I never really liked it, since I'm probably one of the few nerds who actually knew the history of the closing decade of the sengokujidai, and realized just how little Clavell added to what was, essentially, a true story.

The sad reality is most people think Clavell dreamed up the whole thing on his own.

Still, he deserves credit for seamlessly weaving a large percentage of true history (my guess is 60-70% is about right) with his own story, not including the name chances. In fact, I can't think of another piece of solidly historical fiction that did as good a job as Clavell's Shogun mixing history with fiction, excepting Yoshikawa Eiji's Musashi, of course. That's the king of the hill, as far as I'm concerned.
