Kinji Fukasaku's Battle Royale... July 30 2001 at 2:54 AM
So, has anybody else watched this film? I guess it grossed fairly respectably in Japan last year, and grossed a lot of the old guard out, as well.
I'm curious who else might have watched it, and what you thought about it. To be honest, I was a tad underwhelmed with the gore -- the film had some gore, some of it gratuitous, but most of it was absolutely no worse than your average "Die Hard" type film.
I will say this much, though...the frenetic pace Battle Royale takes in the way it depicts the kids' horrific realization very successfully communicates the horror they feel. Whatever you may think about how well the film translates from the book or your opinion of movie gore in general, I think you have to admit that the opening thirty minutes are very, very well done. And Beat Takeshi, someone whose other work has yet to particularly impress me, is nothing short of brilliant in the role of Kitano, the "teacher".
