As dodgy as some of the places are, I highly recommend...

Response to Finding a place to live

...gaijin houses. They're a great place to plug into the gaijin scene, pickup pals, learn the ropes, even inherit cushy jobs, private students, learn about moving sales (where you can furnish your new pad at firesale prices).

I recommend getting off the plane and living in one of these places for about a month. In most cases it should cost you no more than 50000, which isn't a lot of money any way you look at it. Often you get a roommate, and as long as you don't keep your valuables in plain sight, you should be fine -- even better if you secure them before moving in (or don't take them at all).

Good advice, I think.
