Asian women and holding hands?

Hey, everyone, I've been lurking for about 2 weeks now after finding this site, and I finally have something to say, well, ask (hence the question mark in the subject). Now, on my way to a college class a few days ago, I noticed 2 Asian chicks holding hands. My first thought was, "Cool, lesbians. Asian ones no less. Haven't seen any of them around here before." I continued on my way, paying no second thought to the conclusion I had made that they were lesbians. Later on, I saw 2 more Asian chicks doing the same thing. Again I quickly rationalized that they must also be lesbians, I mean, why else would they be holding hands? As the week progressed, I've noticed a few more incidents of this, and even saw a chain of three yesterday. Can anyone explain if this is common among Asian women, or at least a specific nationality? I've since figured out that not all of these chicks can be lesbians (or if they are, I need to make friends with some of them quick and start hanging out with them ^_^). As far as I can tell, it's about the same as how a lot of American chicks will put their arms through their friends as they walk, a kind of playful type thing, but this is my third year in college and I've never seen this hand holding thing before. Any explanations?
